Flame n' Aqua Shield Overview Flame n' Aqua Technical Reports Flame n' Aqua Shield Technical Information

Preliminary Testing Procedures ASTM E 108-91a and ASTM E 108-93

1.0 Methodology

All test panels are constructed in accordance with the requirements of ASTM E 108-93 with the exception of the size of the test panel. The test panels used on the deck are 1.32m x 1.22m #1 grade shakes or shingles.

2.0 Application of Fire Retarding Material and Weathering

Two coats of Flame n' Aqua Shield containing a borax solution is sprayed on a test panel at a rate of 40 sq. ft. per liter. Shakes or shingles may also be treated by the dipping process, or by pressure impregnation, then applied to test panel. Test panels are marked for identification and transferred to the weathering chamber. In the weathering chamber the panels are set up like a roof with a 4/12 pitch. They will undergo "rain test conditioning" as prescribed in ASTM E 108-91a, described below.

Rain Test for ASTM E 108-91a and for Class A, B and C
Twelve one week conditioning cycles of 96 hours of water expposure at a rate of 0.7 inches of water per hour, followed 72 hours of drying time at 140 degrees F. This equates to 10 to 30 years of actual outdoor weathering.

3.0 Fire Testing

A modified test procedure, to that described in ASTM E 108-93 is used. A test panel is inclined at five inches per horizontal foot. The Spread of Flame, Intermittent Flame, Burning Brand, and Flying Brand tests are conducted as described below. The modifications to ASTM E 108-93 are listed in each test methodology.

3.1 Spread of Flame Test

A flame with a temperature of 704 +/- 28 degrees C is applied to the panel for a period of four minutes. An average air velocity of 5.3 +/- 1.0m/s is maintained at each of the three locations as detailed in ASTM E 108-93 Section 4.4.2. The specimen is tested to the Class C standard in accordance with ASTM E 108-93 Section 8.3, but modified as detailed below.

3.2 Flying Brand Test
A flame with a temperature of 704 +/- 28 degrees C is applied to the same inclined test specimen as mentioned in Section 3.1 for a period of four minutes. An average air velocity of 5.3 +/- 1.0 m/s maintained at each of the three locations detailed in ASTM E 108-93 Section 4.4.2. The specimen is tested to the Class C standard in accordance with ASTM E 108-93 Section 10.3, but modified as detailed below.

3.3 Intermittent Flame Test
A flame with a temperature of 704 +/- 28 degrees C is applied in three cycles to the same inclined test specimen mentioned in Section 3.1. Each cycle consists of a flame on for one minute and off for two minutes. An average air velocity of 5.3 +/- 1.0 m/s is maintained at each of the three locations detailed in ASTM E 108-93 Sections 7.3 and 7.4, but modified as detailed below.

3.4 Burning Brand Test

The burning brands are prepared in accordance with ASTM E 108-93 Sections 9.3.3 and 9.4.3. The specimens are placed on same test specimen mentioned in Section 3.1 in accordance with ASTM E 108-93 Sections 9.5.3 and 9.5.3.1. An average air velocity of 5.3 +/- 1.0 m./s is maintained at each of the three locations detailed in ASTM E 108-93 Section 4.4.2. The test is allowed to continue until all evidence of flame, glow, and smoke have disappeared or 1 1/2 hours. The specimen is tested to the Class C standard in accordance with ASTM E 108-93 Section 9.6, but modified as detailed below.

The Spread of Flame and Flying Brand tests are conducted simultaneously. These tests are followed by the Intermittent Flame Test which is followed by the Burning Brand Test. All the tests are conducted on the same test specimen. Calibrations of flame temperature and air velocity are performed prior to each test. Checks are also made on the flame temperature and air velocity throughout the duration of the tests.
